THE HAT

I GOT A HAT IN THE MAIL ONE DAY
THAT REALLY TOOK MY BREATH AWAY.

IT WAS BRIGHT RED, AND TRIMMED WITH GOLD
AND TOOK ME BACK TO THE DAYS OF "OLD";
WHEN I WAS A "YOUNG PUP" IN GERMANY,
SERVING WITH CHARLIE FIVE FIVE THREE.

I SEE IN THE HAT SOME VERY OLD FRIENDS,
SHOWING ME A BROTHERHOOD, THAT NEVER ENDS.

SO I THANK YOU JIM FOR MAKING FOR ME,
SOMETHING THAT IS NOW, PART OF MY HISTORY.

I WEAR IT WITH PRIDE, FOR THAT WHICH IT STANDS,
THAT I WAS PRIVILEDGED TO SERVE,
THIS WONDERFUL LAND.

THANK YOU.
